Foix , population 10,466, is capital of the Ariège. It lies astride the Ariège River at the foot of the Pyrenees. It is an administrative and tourist center with some small industry. It grew around an oratory founded by Charlemagne and became the capital of the countship of Foix. The town is full of restaurants and bars. There is a cinema, a swimming pool and picturesque centre lined with small shops. |

There are markets twice a week for most
of the year in the town square with an African crafts market on Tuesdays.
On Fridays the town market runs alongside a covered farmer's market.
